This is not a new idea, it’s been around for ages - but you don’t see it very often. This specialty printing technique is another example of how screen printing can offer things for your branded merch that the age of digital printing can’t. It was immediately apparent that this screen was laying down a lot of ink! We put down one layer, hit it with the flash cure, followed by the roller to smooth that ink down. After that, we laid down a couple more layers and watched the ink build up, flash curing the ink between each layer. With proper technique the final print can be soft to the touch while still having perfect bright prints - on any colour garment. We’ve come a long way since those tees in the 80’s with prints as thick as a coin. The darker the shirt, the more it influences the colour of the ink. Water based ink is absorbed into the fabric of the shirt and then as it passes through our dryer, the water evaporates leaving the print colour permanently in the fabric. A reaction occurs while the shirt is passing through the dryer that causes the dye in the fabric to disappear. We can use discharge as an underbase on a dark coloured t-shirt, and overprint other water based colours to provide the softest feel on a dark t-shirt. Not all dark coloured t-shirts discharge the same. The file works like a set of instructions that tell the machine when to trim or tie-in, what colour to change to next, and what type of stitch a particular design element requires. Digitizing is a one-time fee that is normally around $30 to $40 for the average design. As the stitch count increases, for example a full-back embroidery design on a leather vest, the digitizing fee also increases. As the stitch count increases, due to artwork size or complexity, so does the price. Their catalogue of poly, sulky, cotton, and fire resistant threads are available in hundreds of colours. Occasionally a second or third colour can be layered onto the final surface, but that’s usually for signage. Die cut vinyl decals are supplied on a backing page along with a transfer tape. Peel back the tape and it brings the design with it, now apply that tape to a car window and peel off the transfer tape - it should leave behind a slick looking design with no ‘background’.
